Vegan Athletic Shoes 2018

A survey of over 110 athletic footwear manufacturers to determine which (if any) of their products are Vegan. Companies were contacted via email, their websites contact forms and/or by facebook from April through September 2018, with the following script:

‘Hello,
I am updating a list of footwear that is suitable for Vegans.
Could you please provide me with the details of your brands footwear that will help me to include you in this list?

To be Vegan, footwear must be made without using animals in any part of the process including bonding materials and dyes.
However, the list also includes footwear that contains animal glues and footwear containing ingredients of unknown or changing origin.
I would like your company to be represented accurately, please provide a sufficient level of detail to allow this.
Please consider all shoes that are marketed under your brand name in all countries.

Thank you for your time’

After receiving the requested information, I followed with another enquiry:

‘Thank you for your reply,
Could you also please tell me where your products are made, as well as your company policy regarding working conditions for all who are employed directly and indirectly by your company?

Thank you again’

The basic results are presented in the table below.
More information, including the correspondence with the companies, is viewable by clicking the company name or by heading directly to the details section.
An explanation of the categories that I have used, can be found near the bottom of the page

Please feel free to recommend any other companies that may also be suitable.

I believe it is also a very good idea to contact the non-vegan companies prior to purchase. This will hopefully give you peace of mind and also lets the companies know that ethical consumers are interested in their products. Please remember that while I seek legitimate information, I cannot guarantee that the information supplied by a customer service representitive is genuine, or that it will not change.
and finally… if you see a search bar on any website, anywhere at all on the web; please type ‘Vegan’ into it 🙂

We respect internationally recognized human rights and environmental standards and place them at the core of our day-to-day business practices. As a prerequisite to doing business with Deckers, we require all independent manufacturers, suppliers, agents, and licenses to complete our rigorous Annual Compliance Training. We recognize that simply signing a certification and completing a training is not enough to ensure compliance. That’s why our Ethical Supply Chain and Restricted Substances teams go beyond simply monitoring factories and suppliers – they drive the ongoing improvement of overall working conditions. The result is a set of trusted factories and suppliers who operate efficient, safe and ethical environments that adhere to our robust compliance standards and produce safe products for all of our consumers.”

2018 Correspondence: “All of our shoes are Vegan other then the Smith Boot and Cayds.”

2018 Working Conditions: “Altra shoes are manufactured in the “shoe capital” of southern China.  Many other running shoe brands such as Merrill, Saucony, Under Armour, Hoka and Adidas are made in the same area and even some of the same factories as Altra. The reason the Altra brand chooses to manufacture in this area is due to the proximity of the shoe materials’ supply chain and the centralization of specialized shoe assembly machines and equipment.  We reduce greenhouse emissions by avoiding the long distance importation of materials and also minimize the distance required for the finished product to exit via the shipping port.  We take great care to select factories that maintain a clean, safe environment for their workers.  The factories are well ventilated and well lit.  One factory I visited allowed the workers to learn several different positions/responsibilities on the assembly line, so that they did not have to do the same repetitive job too long.  I have personally visited all of our factories and from what I have been able to see can vouch that the workers are well cared for and are happy to be employed.  We have found ways to be more efficient in our shoe designs due to the rising wages of Chinese workers.  These rising wages allow the workers to properly feed and care for their families. The workers are treated well by their supervisors and often live in dormitories next to the factory so they can easily walk to their job.  There is definitely a correlation between the higher quality factories and the level of cleanliness and good treatment of their employees.  We value both of these things in the factories we select to make Altra shoes. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns!”

Correspondence: “Eco-Vegan Shoes as the name indicates are vegan shoes – no animal products nor by-products have been used in production and post-production. We are confident that our shoes feature environmentally friendlier materials, from the Swiss made Schoeller fabric used on the majority of the uppers to the non animal glue used in their assembly. Wherever possible we work closely with the Vegan Society who check all our claims before giving them their approval. We only work to the highest ethical standards and only use the highest quality environmentally friendly materials such as Eco-Ortholite which replaces 20% of the petroleum traditionally used in the ployol of urethane foams with bio-oil. Even our shoeboxes are made of 99% bio-degradable material. Moreover, our motto is Comfort Technology and Beyond Leather. Our shoes are technologically advanced – we offer special, non-slip outsoles, energy gel pads in the heel area for shock absorption, moisture-wicking Eco-Ortholite insoles for extra comfort and to prevent odour. Also, Schoeller fabric used for many of our models is an advanced fabric which acts as a membrane (pinecone effect), it opens when it’s hot and closes when it’s cold –depending on the feet temperature. What is more, our shoes are either water-resistant or waterproof and that is why we have a large, devoted audience within world vegan community.”

Whilst we also specify our adhesives to be vegan-friendly, and have commitment from our factory to this effect, we cannot guarantee there is no contamination or lack of integrity further down the supply chain – ie our suppliers into the factory. We do our best on this with regular visits to check on the quality and specifications we require.”

2018 Working Conditions: “We hate unfairness, intolerance, pomposity, lack of integrity as well as any wasted use of our shared resources. We design and develop all our products in the UK and work very closely with our Chinese manufacturing partners. We have as tight an operation and supply chain as we can, but continually work to improve. We have long term relationships with smaller, family run factories where we can discuss and agree what is acceptable in terms of quality, cost and worker terms and conditions. We pay a little more but try to ensure every ‘stakeholder’ has a little more than ‘average’ in terms of pay and conditions such as time off. We will not work in the more cost-driven, ‘sweat-shop’ environments where no one cares except the big boss and his wallet.”

2018 Working Conditions: “Factories are in Vietnam, as well as China. As a company who truly values its employees, Deckers strives to do its part to ensure workers all over the globe are treated fairly and are able to conduct their work in a safe environment. We respect internationally recognized human rights and environmental standards and place them at the core of our day-to-day business practices. As a prerequisite to doing business with Deckers, we require all independent manufacturers, suppliers, agents, and licenses to complete our rigorous Annual Compliance Training. 2018 Correspondence: “The word “vegan” can be defined in various ways. Using uppers made of fabric instead of leather gets you halfway there in the process for boots. Neither leather nor animal wool is used in all boots of the All Terrain Sport collection and of some other models. No animal glues are used to make the boots either. But the process used to demonstrate that no animal products are used in all components is fairly elaborate. It takes real detective work to determine whether the dyes, chemicals, enhancement substances, etc. are free of animal parts. The main reason for this is that a very large number of individual pieces and components are used to make high-quality outdoor boots. The INNOX model, for instance, has more than 150 parts. It is nearly impossible to examine all of these criteria. LOWA is also unable to make any credible statement regarding the very strict vegan criteria that require, among other things, that no animal experiments were conducted on the materials used in the boots and that all plant fibres were produced by certified organic farms.”

There, we have partnered with manufacturing craftsmen who have more than 20 years experience in performance running shoe production. Their work is of the highest technical specifications needed to live up to our “Swiss Engineering” standards. For example, we at On produce one of the lightest performance running shoes in the world that is manufactured with a newly created and unique sole-injected molding. The upper of our shoe works with the latest netting materials that are laser cut and seamlessly composed, meaning they no longer need to be sewn. Our manufacturing partners have invested in the necessary equipment, processes and employee training needed to not only create shoes of the highest caliber, but to be able to change with new and improved technologies constantly. Collaboration is done closely with On. Every other month, sessions are held together around the implementation, exploration and use of the latest technology and production capabilities. The entire development of the technology and the design takes place at our headquarters in Switzerland. Our production partners working standards are based on those of Europe. As such, they also produce for several other leading european brands who also pride themselves on working conditions in production. Vietnam historically has a strong worker protection and trade union, which are rooted deeply into the grain of society. There are mandatory maximum working hours, holiday schemes and statutory maternity leave (6 months). Vietnam relies on local residents and employees that come from the region to work locally.”

2018 Working Conditions: “We are a young, owner-managed company based in Dießen am Ammersee, have been developing and producing our Sole Runner® barefoot shoes since 2011. The development of our shoes takes place in Germany. Ethics, social responsibility and sustainable values are not a theory for us – we live them every day. Holistic approaches such as healthy walking, closeness to nature, sustainability, high quality and fair prices are just as important to us as decent working conditions with our production partners at home and abroad. After 4 years of production in Slovenia and our producer gave up production, we had to look for a new production site. On recommendation we found a German shoe agency in India, which cooperates with a family business in Chennai (formerly Madras) in South India. Sole Runner shoes, which are developed in Germany, have been produced in India since 2015, mostly in factories run by entrepreneurs. There is a German office in the production facilities with which the team from Germany is in daily contact. The German development team is on site three to four times a year. Sole Runner buys the fabric materials from German suppliers. The high-quality outsoles come directly from Slovenia. Our Indian producer has a strong sense of responsibility and has voluntarily committed itself to the international guidelines of the SCoC (Social Code of Conduct). Our regular visits to the factory confirm this sense of responsibility time and again. These guidelines of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), based in Geneva, serve to ensure global labour and social standards with the aim of ensuring labour law and decent work for people worldwide.”

2018 Correspondence: 1st response: “As an ethical company, We are committed to creating products that safeguard the environment but it is particularly challenging to do so when it comes to delivering the high-performance products that our customers expect. Some of the chemicals we use to impart performance characteristics like water, stain and oil repellency contain PFCs (perfluorinated compounds). For the last few years we’ve been working to replace these Durable Water Repellency (DWR) chemicals with environmentally preferable options. You can read updates about our responsible chemistry progress on our blog, Never Stop Exploring. We share our standards for chemical safety with all of our suppliers and maintain a RESTRICTED SUBSTANCE LIST (RSL) that identifies chemical substances that are restricted from our products for regulatory, safety and/or environmental reasons. We also help our suppliers identify environmentally preferable chemicals. We do work very closely in using materials that are environmentally safe along with responsible standards for the animal products we may use. We have very responsible down standards. We also only use faux furs on our products as well.  I hope the substance list will provide a good explanation of our chemicals. With this said, we are still using some animal product in the adhesives, so we do not have a completely vegan shoe.”

2nd response: “I believe most of our footwear is made with animal products. I would not know about the glues that are used as our products are made all over the world and there would be no way of finding that out. I am sorry for the inconvenience. Have a great day!”

2018 Working Conditions: After receiving the previous 2 *interesting* responses from The North Face, I decided not to initiate further communication with them.

We’re working hard to explore all the angles of sustainable shoe-making, and at the moment, we believe that there isn’t a single material that blows the others off the podium… so we’re continuing to work with a wide mix of materials and be quick on the uptake for any new and exciting options.”

Description of definitions used
Result Description
Vegan company The company is Vegan, there should never be any need to doubt any of their products. These companies should be an ethical consumers first choice for our own peace of mind.
All Vegan The company has stated by correspondence that all of their footwear products are Vegan. However, they do not appear to identify themselves as a Vegan company, so there is a possibility that future products will not be ethical.
Vegan options The company provides styles that are completely Vegan, but not all of their styles are Vegan.
Synthetic options, bonding agents and dyes may be of animal origin The company provides styles that are free from animal derived ingredients, excepting (perhaps) the bonding agents and/or dyes etc. This is the one that I find most annoying, basically the company does not know (or is unwilling to back itself regarding) the type of bonding agents and/or dyes etc that are used at all times. They may vary due to season/availability/price etc. To me this is both an ethical and quality control issue. Shoe manufacturers generally market themselves as high tech and very deliberate in their materials and design. The suggestion that they are unaware of their own ingredients and/or processes, brings the companies and the industry itself into question. Footwear purchased from these manufacturers, may or may not be Vegan.
Synthetic options, bonding agents and/or dyes are of animal origin The company provides styles that are free from animal derived ingredients, excepting the bonding agents and/or dyes etc, which they state are derived from animals. I have no idea why a company would choose to still do this, in this day and age.
No Vegan options The company deliberately chooses to provide no ethical footwear.
awaiting reply Not enough time has passed since I made initial contact with the company, or they have responded that they are collecting the required details so that they can respond appropriately.
No reply The company has been contacted at least 3 times over an extended period, using a variety of methods (email, contact form, facebook etc) but No reply has been received from them.
Uncooperative The company has been contacted at least 3 times over an extended period, using a variety of methods (email, contact form, facebook etc) but is only willing to provide vague details or none at all. Companies in this category tend to ask why they are being questioned, by who and for what purpose. But even after responding to their questions, they continue to be Uncooperative. Thankfully these companies are rare, the majority of companies in this survey have provided very good customer service. Only a handful of the companies surveyed make me want to look at Barnivore
